Ask any entrepreneur and they’d probably say that starting a business is one of the most challenging (but rewarding) aspects of their lives... and it’s easy to see why! From securing funding to building a team, and everything in between, entrepreneurship is definitely hard to navigate, and it’s natural for entrepreneurs of any age or skill level to feel a little lost (and overwhelmed!) anywhere in the process.
But you don’t have to navigate the ins and outs of entrepreneurship alone. As with anything else, a good book makes for a great learning partner! With the right read anyone can learn how to hire the right people, become a better leader, and even be more creative. Books written by the entrepreneurs who have been there help expose readers to all aspects of business—which is a huge reason why we love them.
We’re passionate about these reads and the wealth of experience found within their pages, and this is why we teamed up with Barbara Corcoran, one of the minds behind the successful television series “Shark Tank,” to host a book club on all things entrepreneurship. In this exclusive series, Barbara will take a deep dive into several incredible books written by savvy entrepreneurs and thought leaders she knows and trusts.
To kick off the Entrepreneurship Series, Barbara and her co-author Bruce Littlefield will dive into Shark Tales, the incredible true story of how she built the Corcoran Group from a tiny New York City office into a full service real-estate brokerage valued at millions of dollars with nothing more than $1,000 and a handful of tips from her stay-at-home mom.
But her success is only half of the story. Despite her seemingly fast growth with the firm, Barbara tried careers in many different fields before finally finding her niche in real estate, and she explains how each of these experiences gave her a tool needed to make The Corcoran Group successful. “Sometimes very successful people appear to be winging it because they look so comfortable on their feet,” says Barbara in Shark Tales. “ But don’t be fooled; there ain’t no such thing. They just come across that way because they practiced so many times.”
Though Barbara is unabashed about her successes and failures in Shark Tales, she bares even more about what it was like moving to New York, being “stabbed in the back” as a business woman, and her biggest business motivator on BookClub. “I always had the book in my head on how to build a business. But my Mom was the motivation and the inspiration behind my whole business and life,” she says.
Not only will Barbara give you insight into her own success story and what it was like writing Shark Tales, she’ll dive even deeper into entrepreneurship, funding, decision making, and leadership with every book she covers with BookClub community members in this can’t miss series.
